India vs West Indies ODI series rewrites record books with highest scoring rate ever

The India-West Indies ODI series was a run-fest from start to finish, with the three-match contest setting a new record for the highest scoring rate in a bilateral series involving at least three ODIs.The series recorded a scoring rate of 7.43 runs per over, the highest in the format for a bilateral series of three or more matches. The previous record was held by England’s 2015 home series against New Zealand, which produced a scoring rate of 7.15 runs per over. India themselves were involved in the third-highest mark, scoring at 7.00 runs per over against England in the 2017 series. England’s 2019 series against Pakistan comes fourth at 6.97.The numbers underline just how explosive the India-West Indies contest was.The first ODI saw 595 runs scored, with West Indies making 295 for seven before India chased down the target in just 41.4 overs, finishing on 300 for two.The second ODI raised the bar considerably. West Indies piled up 405 for seven, only for India to chase down the target in 43.3 overs, reaching 406 for two. The match produced 811 runs. The run-scoring continued in the series finale, with India making 351 for seven before West Indies completed a record chase of 352 for five in 48.2 overs. The third ODI alone produced 703 runs.Across the three matches, both teams repeatedly crossed the 300-run mark. India eventually won the series 2-1, sealing victories by eight wickets in the first two matches before West Indies produced a five-wicket consolation win in the finale. The series was so heavily tilted towards the batters that, apart from Kuldeep Yadav’s four-wicket spell in the opening ODI, there was little in the bowling departments to remember. The India spinner’s spell stood out as one of the few occasions when a bowler managed to exert sustained influence on a contest otherwise dominated by the bat.Even India’s 406-run chase in the second ODI prompted head coach Gautam Gambhir to question whether such batting-friendly conditions offered enough preparation for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.Gambhir was unequivocal in his assessment after the match.“There has to be a bit more contest between bat and ball because this is not cricket, this is only batting,” he said. His comments pointed to a larger concern for India despite their 2-1 series win. While the extraordinary scoring rates made for compelling batting numbers, the series also exposed questions around India’s bowling attack.Kuldeep was the notable exception, with his four-wicket haul in the first ODI providing one of the few standout bowling performances of the series. Beyond him, India struggled to consistently make an impact with the ball across the three matches.Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel are expected to return to the ODI setup, which should strengthen the attack, but the series has nevertheless left India with questions over the depth and balance of their bowling options ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
