Jamia Millia Islamia amends exam rules to let final-year students clear backlogs through compartment exams

For many final-year students, a single backlog paper can delay graduation by months. Jamia Millia Islamia has now changed its examination rules to reduce that wait, allowing eligible students to appear directly for compartment examinations instead of waiting for the next regular examination cycle. The decision was approved by the university’s Executive Council through an amendment to Ordinance-15, according to PTI.

What changes for final-year students

Under the revised rules, students in the final semester or final year under the annual system who have backlog papers from any previous semester or year will be eligible to take a compartment examination after their final semester or final annual examination. The university said the schedule for the compartment examinations will be announced separately by the Office of the Controller of Examinations. The provision applies only to students enrolled in regular courses. Those pursuing programmes through distance education will not be covered under the revised rules.

Re-evaluation option also revised

The amendment to Clause 24.4 of Ordinance-15 states that compartment examinations will generally not be conducted for courses following the carry-over system. However, an exception has been made for final-year or final-semester students, allowing them to clear backlog papers through compartment examinations. The Executive Council has also amended the re-evaluation provisions. Under the revised Clause 23.1 of Ordinance-15, final-year students can choose to appear directly in the compartment examination instead of applying for re-evaluation of their answer scripts.Students in other years will continue to have the option of applying for re-evaluation within 15 days of the declaration of results, as per the existing procedure, according to PTI.
