Mani Ratnam and Aishwarya Rai: How a timeless director-actress bond began

Some actor-director combinations become memorable because of a successful film, while a few turn into a lasting part of cinema history. Mani Ratnam and Aishwarya Rai belong to the latter category. Their association has given us some unforgettable characters and moments across the various phases of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s career. From her debut in Tamil cinema to her later appearances in large-scale period dramas, the actress has repeatedly collaborated with the acclaimed filmmaker. Their journey, however, began much before they actually worked together, with a chance connection that eventually changed the course of Aishwarya Rai’s acting career.

Aishwarya Rai’s first meeting with Mani Ratnam changed her career

The beginning of this celebrated combination goes back to Aishwarya Rai’s modelling days, when she was working on several advertisements with cinematographer Rajiv Menon. During one such shoot, Rajiv Menon introduced her to the music of ‘Roja,’ which had not yet been released. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was immediately impressed by the music and already had great admiration for Mani Ratnam’s work. When Menon later told her that Mani Ratnam wanted to meet her for a film, she initially thought he was simply teasing her.Recalling their first meeting, Aishwarya Rai said, “When I first met Mani Ratnam, he narrated the story of ‘Iruvar’ to me and then, very respectfully, asked me if I would like to be part of the film, even though he already knew what my answer would be.” That meeting would soon lead to her first major step into acting.

Aishwarya Rai calls Mani Ratnam her Guru and acting inspiration

For Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the opportunity was much more than a film debut. She has often spoken about the impact Mani Ratnam had on her confidence as an actress and the importance of meeting him at the beginning of her journey. “Mani Ratnam is my guru. Meeting him gave me the confidence to begin my acting career. Listening to him was like sitting in front of a teacher and attending a lesson,” she recalled. With no formal acting training and no family connection to the film industry, Aishwarya Rai entered cinema without prior experience.Yet, her first interaction with Mani Ratnam made her feel that she had found the right person to guide her. “I felt that this was the right place to begin my journey as an actress. It felt as though this place had been created for me,” she said. Their creative partnership would later grow into one of Indian cinema’s most recognised actor-director collaborations.

Mani Ratnam and Aishwarya Rai’s iconic films and Nandini connection

After ‘Iruvar,’ Mani Ratnam and Aishwarya Rai reunited for several important projects, including ‘Guru,’ ‘Raavanan,’ and the ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ films. Each of their collaborations put the actress in a different setting and allowed their creative partnership to blossom thru the years. Their most recent work was Mani Ratnam’s ambitious two-part adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s celebrated historical novel, ‘Ponniyin Selvan.‘Nandini, a powerful and mysterious woman, was one of the most discussed characters of the film, and was played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, with her beauty, intelligence and political ambition. Her performance was yet another memorable chapter in the Mani Ratnam-Aishwarya Rai combination.Almost three decades after ‘Iruvar’, their collaboration continues to be a shining example of how the vision of a director and the performance of an actor can create characters that live in the minds of viewers long after the film has ended.
