The iconic Bandra landmark has become synonymous with first-day-first-show madness, deafening whistles, packed screenings and audiences turning film releases into celebrations of their own. Some of the biggest moments in Hindi cinema have unfolded inside its halls, making the theatre a cherished part of Mumbai’s moviegoing culture.The iconic cinema complex has now temporarily halted its shows, after a notice from the Bandra police cited the non-renewal of its licence as the reason for the closure. However, theatre executive director Manoj Desai has offered a different explanation, saying the shutdown is linked to a technical problem at the property.Desai revealed that some cables inside the theatre had burned and that new ones were being sourced from Lohar Chawl in South Mumbai. He maintained that the shows would resume once the replacement cables were arranged.“The actual reason is some of the cables in the theatre got burned. We have to arrange for new cables from Lohar Chawl, South Mumbai. Till that is arranged our shows cannot resume. It’s just a technical issue, nothing more than that,” he told Hindustan Times.The development came to light after journalist Narendra Gupta shared a photograph on Instagram on Monday showing a notice issued by the Bandra police and displayed outside the theatre. The notice stated, “The cinema has been closed for the next few shows due to non-renewal of its license.”The temporary closure comes at a particularly significant moment for Gaiety Cinema, which once again found itself at the centre of a major film celebration just a day earlier. Founded by Manoj Desai on November 24, 1972, the complex initially featured three screens — Gaiety, Galaxy and Gemini. Four additional screens were subsequently added, named Glamour, Gem, Gossip and Grace. The cinema began its journey with Ramesh Sippy’s Seeta Aur Geeta and went on to establish itself as one of Mumbai’s most recognisable theatres.
