Why Oklahoma speed-limit signs say “No tolerance,” and what it really means for drivers

Most speed-limit signs across the United States are simple and straightforward. They display the maximum legal speed and little else. But drivers travelling through Oklahoma may notice something unusual. Beneath the posted speed limit, many signs carry an additional message: “No Tolerance.” For first-time visitors, the phrase can be confusing. Does it mean you’ll be...

Monsoon riding guide: Do's and don'ts for two-wheeler owners

The monsoon season brings welcome relief from the summer heat, but it also makes riding a two-wheeler significantly more challenging. Heavy rain and slippery surfaces increase the risk of skids, breakdowns and accidents. However, a few preventive measures and the right riding habits can improve safety during the rainy months. Here’s a quick riding guide for the monsoon.

Monsoon riding guide in India: Quick tips

One of the first things riders should inspect before the monsoon arrives is their motorcycle or scooter’s tyres. Good tread depth is essential for maintaining grip on wet roads, as worn tyres struggle to disperse water and are more prone to hydroplaning. Tyre pressure should also be checked regularly and kept within the manufacturer’s recommended range. The braking system also deserves attention before the rainy season begins. Brake pads, brake shoes and cables should be inspected for wear because stopping distances become much longer on wet roads. Riders with ABS-equipped motorcycles should also ensure that the sensors and wiring are clean and functioning properly.Riders should also ensure that headlights, taillights and indicators are working properly, while those using scooters with windscreens should check for scratches or fogging that could affect visibility.Protective riding gear becomes even more important during the rains. A waterproof riding jacket or rain suit helps riders stay dry and maintain concentration, while a full-face helmet with an anti-fog visor or Pinlock insert improves visibility. Gloves with textured palms also help maintain a secure grip on the handlebars.Once on the road, riding style plays a major role in safety. Speeds should be reduced and the distance from the vehicle ahead increased because wet roads can nearly double braking distances. Smooth throttle inputs and gradual braking using both front and rear brakes help reduce the chances of skidding. Visibility is another key concern during heavy rain. Riders should use low beam headlights instead of high beam, as high beams reflect off rain droplets and reduce visibility. Maintaining a safe distance from large vehicles such as buses and trucks is equally important because the water spray they generate can make it difficult to see the road ahead. After completing a ride, riders should wipe down the motorcycle, especially chrome and exposed metal parts, to minimise rust. The air filter should be checked periodically during the season, as moisture and dirt can affect engine performance. It is also advisable not to delay scheduled servicing, since constant exposure to rain and grime accelerates wear on several components.
