MP Board exam pattern revised for Classes 9 to 12, internal choice removed in 2-mark questions
MPBSE has revised internal-choice rules for Classes 9 to 12 from the 2026–27 academic session, retaining choices in select questions and introducing them for five- and seven-mark questions in NSQF subjects.

The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) has revised the internal-choice rules for examinations of Classes 9 to 12, with the changes set to take effect from the 2026–27 academic session. Under the revised pattern, students will no longer get internal choices in two-mark questions in the main subjects.According to the Board’s notification dated October 15, 2026, internal choices will continue in three-mark and four-mark questions in the main subjects. The Board has also introduced internal choices in five-mark and seven-mark questions for subjects offered under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).The revised rules follow decisions taken at the Board’s Curriculum Committee meeting on August 20, 2025, and subsequently approved at the Executive Committee meeting on August 28, 2025.

What has changed in the MP Board exam pattern?

The revised rules specify the availability of internal choices according to the marks assigned to questions and the category of the subject. The main change is the removal of internal choices from two-mark, very short-answer questions in main subjects.Students will continue to get internal choices in three-mark short-answer questions and four-mark long-answer questions in these subjects. For NSQF subjects, the Board has introduced internal choices in five-mark long-answer questions and seven-mark essay-type questions. The revised pattern distinguishes between main subjects and NSQF subjects. Students should therefore check the question-paper format prescribed for their respective subjects instead of assuming that the same internal-choice rules apply across all papers.

When will the revised MPBSE rules come into effect?

The revised internal-choice rules will apply from the 2026–27 academic session. The notification has been issued by the MPBSE secretary from Bhopal.Students preparing for examinations during the upcoming academic session should familiarise themselves with the updated question-paper pattern. The removal of internal choices in two-mark questions means that students appearing for main-subject examinations will need to prepare for these questions without relying on an alternative question being provided. At the same time, internal choices will remain available in specified three-mark and four-mark questions in main subjects. Students taking NSQF subjects should also account for the newly introduced choices in five-mark and seven-mark questions.

Where to check the official MPBSE notification?

Students can check the official notification on the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education’s website, mpbse.nic.in. The notice is available under the Academics section.Candidates should refer to the official notification and the applicable subject-wise examination guidelines to confirm the revised pattern for their class and subjects. Checking these details in advance will help students understand the structure of their question papers and plan their examination preparation accordingly.
