SCBA condemns alleged lathi charge on students, seeks impartial inquiry and accountability over protest incident

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Tuesday passed a resolution condemning the alleged lathi charge on students and members of the legal fraternity, describing the reported use of force against peaceful protesters as “deeply disturbing” and “wholly unacceptable in a democratic society.The resolution, dated July 22, 2026, called for an immediate, impartial and time-bound inquiry into the incident. The association also sought action against those responsible, medical assistance for the injured and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.Resolution condemns alleged use of forceIn its resolution, the SCBA stated that it “strongly condemns the brutal lathi charge on innocent students, which resulted in several students sustaining serious injuries.” It added that members of the legal fraternity, including SCBA members, were also injured during the incident.The association said, “The use of excessive and disproportionate force against peaceful students and members of the Bar is deeply disturbing and wholly unacceptable in a democratic society.”SCBA seeks inquiry and accountabilityThe resolution urged the authorities to conduct “an immediate, impartial and time-bound inquiry into the incident, identify those responsible for the excessive use of force, and take appropriate action in accordance with law.”The SCBA also called on the authorities to ensure proper medical treatment and assistance for all injured students and members of the legal fraternity.In addition, the association urged the authorities to take necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.The resolution stated that the SCBA stands in solidarity with those who sustained injuries during the incident.“The Association stands in solidarity with all those injured and reiterates its commitment to protecting constitutional rights, human dignity and the rule of law,” the resolution said. The statement was issued by SCBA Honorary Secretary Pragya Baghel and released on July 22, 2026.
