NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27: The Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education has invited fresh and renewal applications for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the 2026-27 academic year. Eligible students can submit their applications through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) until August 31, 2026.The deadline for both fresh and renewal applications is August 31, 2026. Students have been advised to complete the application process before the closing date to avoid last-minute issues. The ministry has also directed officers to complete the verification process within the prescribed timeline to ensure timely disbursal of scholarships.Application process through NSPEligible students can apply by visiting the official National Scholarship Portal. They must first complete the new registration process and log in using their registered credentials. After signing in, applicants need to select the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS), fill in the required details, upload the prescribed documents, review the information carefully and submit the application. Candidates should download and retain the confirmation page for future reference.Verification schedule announcedThe application verification process will be conducted in two stages. Institute Nodal Officers (INOs) will complete Level-1 (L1) verification by September 15, 2026. District Nodal Officers (DNOs) will carry out Level-2 (L2) verification by September 30, 2026. The ministry has instructed officials to complete both stages within the scheduled period to facilitate timely release of scholarship funds.Students can apply for multiple schemesFrom the 2026-27 academic year, students will be permitted to apply for one merit-based scholarship scheme along with one or more welfare-based scholarship schemes at the same time. Applicants, however, must satisfy the eligibility conditions prescribed under each individual scheme.Benefits under the NMMSS schemeThe National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is a centrally sponsored programme designed to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections and reduce dropout rates at the secondary stage. The scheme encourages students to continue their education after Class 8.Under NMMSS, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded each year to eligible students studying in Class 9. The scholarship can be renewed for Classes 10 to 12, subject to the prescribed conditions. It is available to students enrolled in state government, government-aided and local body schools.
