Oversight of Trai has hit us: Truecaller

NEW DELHI: Truecaller on Wednesday said users are blocking four lakh calls originating from 140-series and over 1.2 lakh calls from 1,600-series numbers everyday as it lobbied against whitelisting (verified number system).Since Oct, users have recorded 7.4 crore blocking actions on the two number series, while nearly four out of five calls from them are now going unanswered. Blocking of 1,600-series numbers, used by banks and financial service providers, has also more than tripled during the period.“Over 51 million calls from both series go unanswered every single day,” Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala said, adding, the company was “mandated not to tell our users that those calls are spam”, despite rising community reports of spam and scam calls. The data comes a day after reports said Trai had approached ministry of electronics and information technology, seeking powers to regulate caller ID applications after Truecaller introduced a “Frequently Blocked” badge for 140- and 1600-series numbers.“We said enough is enough,” Jhunjhunwala said, defending the feature. He also criticised the reported move to regulate caller ID apps, saying, “This makes absolutely no sense… penalise the bad actors, not the ones like Truecaller.”
