Maybe you want an apology, or an explanation, or just an opportunity to hurt the other person back.The Bhagavad Gita gives another answer in Chapter 12, Verses 13-14. Krishna says a spiritually mature person doesn’t carry hatred, is compassionate, balanced, and develops forgiveness.That teaching is especially powerful when the wound is personal.

Krishna Does Not Ask You to Pretend Nothing Happened

People often confuse forgiveness with weakness.You don’t have to deny that someone behaved badly. Dishonesty, disrespect or betrayal are easy to spot.Krishna teaches about what happens inside you after the event.When anger takes over your mind, the person who hurt you is still controlling your life even when they are no longer there.The wound was a one-off. And you can experience it many more times by replaying it.

Hatred Can Keep You Connected to the Person

It is a popular belief that people attach themselves only because of love.Anger also creates attachment.You can keep checking on what the other person is doing. You make up arguments that won’t happen. You wait for life to punish them and then you can finally be satisfied.That keeps emotional attention fixed on the same person.In Krishna’s idea, freedom is different.You can remember what happened without letting resentment take up space in your brain every day.

Compassion Does Not Remove Boundaries

Chapter 12 extols friendliness and compassion, but that doesn’t mean giving everyone unlimited access to you.A compulsive liar may need space. Firm limits may be needed in a disrespectful relationship. Trust may also have to be rebuilt slowly rather than restored quickly.You don’t have to take revenge to be safe.You can wish someone no harm without inviting them back into the same place in your life.That is an important difference.

Your Ego May Want the Final Word

The pain is so painful it often causes another struggle.You want them to know what they have lost. You want them to admit you are right. Sometimes you want to see that they feel sorry about their behaviour.Krishna’s teaching on the ego’s diminution challenges this need.Peace is hard when it relies on someone else finally responding the way you want.Their apology is out of your hands. Your answer is not.

Forgiveness Can Be an Act of Inner Independence

Forgiveness doesn’t rewrite the past.It changes how much power the past has in the present.You might still remember the event. You may choose to never rebuild the relationship. But the memory doesn’t have to control your mood, your confidence, or your future relationships.Bhagavad Gita 12.13-14 shifts away from punishment and focuses on inner freedom.There was a reason for the pain. They also do not need to be granted permanent control over the person you become afterwards. Krishna’s lesson.
