Why September 19 Is the Correct Date

In the Hindu calendar, a festival is not decided only by asking when a tithi starts.One has to see:Which tithi is present at sunrise?And, more importantly,Is that tithi present during the kala relevant to that particular festival?This principle is repeatedly used in traditional works such as Dharma Sindhu and Nirnaya Sindhu, where festival observance is decided according to the tithi prevailing during the required kala.For some festivals, sunrise is important.For some, Aparahna matters. For some, Pradosha. For others, Nishita. And in the case of Radha Ashtami, Madhyahna is especially important.Radha Rani’s appearance worship is traditionally associated with the Madhyahna period, which means the Ashtami Tithi should ideally be present during that time.

Now look at 2026

On September 18, Ashtami begins only at 1:00 PM. So at sunrise, Saptami is still prevailing.On September 19, Ashtami is already running at sunrise and continues until 3:26 PM.That means Ashtami is present not only at sunrise but also through the relevant Madhyahna period.This makes September 19 the stronger and more appropriate day for Radha Ashtami observance.Udaya Tithi Alone Is Not the Complete Explanation

People often use one simple rule:

“The tithi present at sunrise is the festival tithi.”This works in many cases, but it is not the full science of festival determination.The classical Panchang system is more layered.The relevant tithi must be seen together with the prescribed kala of the festival.So for Radha Ashtami, the stronger logic is not merely:“Ashtami is present at sunrise on September 19.”

The more complete logic is:

Ashtami is present at sunrise and continues through Madhyahna, the key worship period for Radha Rani.That is why September 19 becomes the correct day of observance.Radha Ashtami 2026 Puja MuhuratThe most important worship window is the Madhyahna Kala (11:30 AM to 1 PM)For Delhi-NCR, the principal puja period falls roughly around late morning to early afternoon, and Radha Rani puja, bhog, mantra japa, aarti and sankalpa should ideally be completed during this period.Exact Madhyahna timing can vary slightly by location because it is calculated from local sunrise and sunset.

What About Fasting?

Radha Ashtami fasting is also followed differently across traditions. Many Vaishnava traditions observe the fast from morning until the completion of Madhyahna worship and then take prasad.Other traditions may follow a stricter vrata, including a longer fast or Ekabhukta.
