Rani Mukerji‘s mother Krishna Mukerji, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 75. The actress shared a close bond with her mother, who often spoke about Rani’s career and achievements, including her National Award win for ‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’.Last year, during Durga Puja, Krishna had spoken about Rani’s National Award and expressed her happiness while also revealing that she believed her daughter deserved the honour much earlier for her performance in ‘Black’. Speaking to Instant Bollywood, she had said, “I am happy that she got a National Award. But (she got it) very late. She should (have gotten the award) for the film Black, I think so. But today, I am very proud of her.”Krishna had also pointed out that Rani received the National Award after nearly 30 years in the film industry, adding that she was nevertheless happy to see her daughter receive the prestigious honour.Rani has often credited her mother for encouraging her to pursue acting. In several interviews, the actress has recalled how Krishna suggested that she try acting as an experiment when she was 18. That decision eventually led Rani to make her Bollywood debut with ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat’ in 1997.Yash Raj Films confirmed Krishna Mukerji’s demise in a statement, which read, “With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji’s mother Mrs Krishna Mukerji, 75, passed away this afternoon. The family is deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and support, and respectfully requests privacy during this time of immense grief.”Rani was last seen on the big screen in ‘Mardaani 3’, which released earlier this year and received a positive response at the box office. The actress will next be seen in ‘King’, which stars Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role. The film is scheduled to release on December 24, 2026.
