Tamil Nadu CM Vijay gets relief as estranged wife Sangeetha withdraws divorce petition in Chengalpattu court after a 15 minute hearing - Report

In a major development in the closely watched divorce case involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor C Joseph Vijay, his wife Sangeetha Sornalingam has withdrawn her divorce petition. The Chengalpattu Family Court formally closed the case after Sangeetha informed Judge Sujatha of her decision during a video-conference hearing on Friday, August 7. The withdrawal brings an end to months of litigation and intense media scrutiny that had followed the couple since the petition was first filed in February 2026.

Sangeetha withdraws divorce petition after court questions her

According to ANI, Sangeetha appeared before Chengalpattu Family Court Judge Sujatha via video conference on Friday and informed the court of her wish to withdraw the divorce petition. The judge reportedly questioned her for around 15 minutes before accepting the withdrawal and formally closing the case. The petition had been filed in February 2026 and was litigated soon after. The case drew significant public interest given the high profiles of both Vijay, who assumed office as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in May 2026, and Sangeetha. The matter had earlier been adjourned to April 20, just days before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, further amplifying the political and legal spotlight on the proceedings during the campaign period.

Allegations made in the divorce petition

In her petition, Sangeetha had alleged that Vijay was involved in an “adulterous relationship” with an actress, claiming she discovered the alleged relationship in April 2021 and that it caused her significant emotional pain and mental suffering. She further alleged that Vijay continued his association with the actress, causing her emotional distress and embarrassment to their children. The petition also claimed that Vijay had emotionally withdrawn from her since 2021, citing verbal disdain and what she termed “constructive desertion.” It is important to note these were allegations contained in the divorce petition and were never adjudicated as judicial findings against Vijay. With the withdrawal of the petition, the proceedings have now concluded without any such findings being made.

A timeline of Vijay and Sangeetha’s marriage

Vijay and Sangeetha first met in 1996. Sangeetha, who is of Sri Lankan origin and was raised in Britain, registered her marriage to Vijay in the UK in 1998. The couple later held a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Chennai on August 25, 1999. They share two children: son Jason Sanjay and daughter Dhivya (also referred to in some reports as Divya Shasha). The divorce case had also become intertwined with a separate legal matter concerning Vijay’s election affidavit. A petition before the Madras High Court had sought an inquiry into his declaration that he had lent Rs 12.60 crore to Sangeetha, while also raising questions about a Rs 20 crore disclosure linked to a private educational trust. The Madras High Court dismissed this petition in April, noting that a similar plea seeking identical relief had already been rejected earlier.
