LUCKNOW: Coming off the golden glow of their Asian Games triumph in Japan, India step into Tuesday’s fivematch T20I series opener against the West Indies at the Ekana Stadium here carrying momentum, silverware and an intriguing selection headache at the top of the order.While Abhishek Sharma’s explosive presence as a designated opener is virtually etched in ink, the suspense lies in who walks out alongside him. It is a clash of narratives: the breathtaking audacity of youth versus the hardened composure of experience.In one corner stands teen prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose fearless strokeplay has set pulses racing across the circuit. In the other is Sanju Samson, the seasoned campaigner whose heroics in India’s 2026 T20 World Cup triumph remains etched in cricketing folklore.Will head coach Gautam Gambhir lean into the romance of the next generation, or will he trust the calm authority of a proven match-winner?Bowling coach Morne Morkel acknowledged the delicate juggling act ahead of the first T20I. “I’m pretty sure Gautam will look to rotate him (Sooryavanshi). That is up to the selectors, and the coach and the captain, in terms of the playing level, or which playing level will be the best to win a game for India on our home soil. In terms of the starting X, he guys just came back from an Asian Games, so we’re going to see how everybody’s feeling after jet lag, after travelling, and then from there, make plans accordingly.”Fatigue, indeed, remains a tangible hurdle. “The red flag, or the problem, might be our guys travelling back and then immediately playing an international match after the Asian Games,” Morkel said. “Some of the guys arrived only a couple of days ago. But I think once we are up and running, and the series gets going, we will be up for it.”The spotlight will also be on skipper Shreyas Iyer. In his last 10 outings at the helm, a half-century has eluded him. Iyer’s blade yielded just 34 runs across two Asian Games fixtures and 48 in three matches against Afghanistan.Fortunately for India, their bowling arsenal welcomes back two electrifying local favourites returning to action after the Zimbabwe tour in July: Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav.Standing in India’s way is a dangerous West Indies outfit marshalled by Shai Hope, who is in blistering touch following back-to-back ODI centuries.For the Caribbean side, Lucknow is a familiar venue. They spent nearly a month in the city in 2019 when Afghanistan used the Ekana Stadium as their home ground. Though history has rarely been kind to them, yielding just one win and three losses in four T20Is at the venue compared to India’s dominant 3-1 ledger.
