Spain end Argentina’s reign in dominant fashion

While the scoreline suggested a closely fought contest, Spain controlled almost every aspect of the final.La Roja enjoyed overwhelming possession, completed nearly twice as many passes and finished with a staggering 20-1 advantage in shots. Argentina were largely restricted throughout the contest and their task became even harder after Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card late in normal time, forcing Lionel Scaloni’s side to play the entire extra-time period with 10 men.The breakthrough finally arrived just 37 seconds into the second half of extra time. Pedro Porro floated a deep cross into the area, Nico Williams headed the ball back across goal and Ferran Torres arrived perfectly to smash a left-footed finish into the roof of the net beyond Emiliano Martinez. The goal secured Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title and their first since 2010.
